I'm just a regular Martha Stewart

Mayra wanted to make pumpkin pie. She had been asking a lot this Fall, but had really started last year when they went to a pumpkin patch.
We had a big pumpkin to carve into a Jack O'Lantern, then two smaller ones that she picked out just because she liked them. I explained repeatedly that we could cut the two smaller ones to make pie, and that they would eventually rot and go to waste if we didn't do anything with them.
Yesterday she was still willing to cut up her pumpkins, so it was P-Day. Pie day.
I spent the better part of the morning (I'm only exaggerating slightly...) Cutting scraping and baking the pumpkins to soften the pumpkin flesh.
Then we went to the big playground for a bit to play, and make a side trip to the store to get a couple of forgotten items. We stayed at the playground too long, so Mayra was tired and hungry by the time we left. I had offered her a trip to McDonalds, but we had seen a little girl making turkey wraps on TV, so she wanted to make wraps instead. We went to Safeway. Newsflash, do not shop there without their discount card. Our quick trip through the store ended up costing me just over $60. All this because I left the recipe I wanted to use at work, so I had to hunt for a different one at home. I didn't buy pumpkin pie spice before, because the recipe I had at work called for stuff that I had, but the one I copied out at home called for pumpkin pie spice. didya know that a tiny container of spice can cost almost $7? I also didn't not have flour in the house. I probably could have made my own pumpkin pie spice, but I had to go out for flour anyway, and a second can of evaporated milk....and we saw some pretty flowers to take to Mom-Mom.
Get home only to be informed by my most precious 4 yr old that we forgot to stop at McDonalds. Manage to convince precious 4 yr old that we were going to make turkey wraps. Talk about a big pain in the butt. The only thing that went right was spreading ranch dressing on the wrap. Mayra made her own, but put too much stuff on and it wouldn't roll. Mine rolled better, but unrolled every time I tried to put it back on the plate. Mayra decided it was more fun to pick and choose individual pieces from hers.
After lunch it was time to make our pie filling. I had bought refrigerated pie crust so that part was somewhat easy. Mayra and I managed to measure and mix enough filling for two pies, and I even got them into the oven without spilling anything inside the oven.
We took one pie to Mom and Dad's house to have after dinner. In attempting to enter Dad's backyard to show off the pie, Baby Fox managed to dart through the gate. I balanced the pie on a lawn chair and took off as fast as I could after the dog. The way it works is that every time she escapes she just wants to run. As far, and as fast as she can possibly go. last time I got lucky because she stopped fairly close to the house to sniff some roadkill. Yesterday she ran to the parking lot of the fence company, then scooted under the gate and ran through the fence yard. Lucky for me, I had my keys in my hand so I unlocked the gate and went in behind her, but still couldn't catch her and she trotted off to the back. At one point I lost sight of her, and thought she had scrambled off into the brush between us and the industrial park, but thank heavens, she had run up the backside of the wood shed, and was running back toward me, so I managed to grab her.
Mom and Mayra were coming across Jimmy's yard, and Dad was on the way out the driveway to give chase in his truck, but I flagged him down before he pulled onto the road. I managed to redeposit the dog in the yard, and put up with a lecture out of Dad about how if the dog continues to get out she will end up getting hit by a car. Like I didn't know that. I do feel lucky that I've managed to catch her, what? I think 4 times now?
After dinner, Mayra decided after a bite or two of pie that she doesn't really like pumpkin pie that much, so I have a whole pie at our house to dispose of on my own. Just what my diet needed.
